Competency Assessment

At AMN Healthcare, the competency and quality of our healthcare professionals is of paramount importance. For this reason, we go to great lengths to conduct a thorough competency assessment of each of our providers. This process consists of three specific stages:

Initial Competency Evaluation

The initial stage of the competency evaluation determines the applicant's qualifications to work with AMN Healthcare. This screening process verifies that the applicant meets the following standards:

  • Educational requirements meet his/her professional discipline;
  • Has work experience of at least 10 months in his/her current specialty in an acute-care setting;
  • Verified references of job-related work experience;
  • Possesses licensure/certification requirements for the position and/or state;
  • Has necessary specialty certifications;
  • Completes self-evaluation skills checklist pertinent to the specialty;
  • No disciplinary action has been taken against the candidate;
  • Has proof of eligibility to legally work in the United States.

Orientation Evaluation

During the orientation stage, the applicant must complete written tests, provided by AMN Healthcare, which evaluate the candidate's knowledge of key competencies, including:

  • Abuse and neglect;
  • Blood borne pathogens and infectious diseases;
  • Restraints;
  • Patient confidentiality;
  • Pain management;
  • Patient safety;
  • Medication administration and safety;
  • Other pertinent information required by The Joint Commission, OSHA and other regulations and organizations.

Continuous Evaluation

The final stage of competency assessment consists of the applicant's performance as it relates to the job requirements and the unit-specific job description provided by the client facility. Continuous evaluation assesses the following areas:

  • Communication, confidentiality, customer service;
  • Competency
  • Adaptability, flexibility;
  • Teamwork, cooperation;
  • Reliability, attendance;
  • Initiative, enthusiasm;
  • Professionalism, continuing education.
Continuing competency is assessed through a review of client evaluations, AMN Healthcare traveler audits and continuing education.

Continuing Education

AMN Healthcare provides its healthcare professionals with free, continuing education through . These courses are available in print and online. also offers many of the state-required courses needed by nurses to be licensed in different states around the country.

Joint Commission Certification

We are committed to ensuring our professionals meet the highest quality standards and have earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™. Competency and skills are evaluated, and candidates and their spouses are thoroughly screened before presentation to a client.

All physicians matched to temporary practice opportunities by Staff Care are licensed in the state where the assignment is located. Staff Care provides its clients with assistance in obtaining physician state licensure and also assists hospitals with facilitating paperwork necessary for the credentialing process as appropriate. In addition, Staff Care provides temporary physicians with A-plus rated malpractice insurance.
